Over the weekend I finally got a chance to checkout something my eCulture pals (Ryan) have been raving about for the last couple of weeks. This thing is a website called SaltyBet, and according to its Wikia:
Salty’s Dream Cast Casino or just SaltyBet for short is a website that embeds a Twitch.tv stream usually of live competitive events like the Evolution Championship Series and allows its users to place virtual bets on said events. When there are no notable competitive events running, the stream runs AI M.U.G.E.N matches and allows people to bet on said matches. Salty Bet is purely for entertainment purposes and no real money will be paid out.Now at first I found myself shaking my head at their fascination. The live matches I could understand, fake betting on your favorite player could only add to the excitement for the kind of audience that’s into watching streams of fighting video games (Randy). The thing is, the live matches weren’t the aspect that my friends were raving about. Instead, they almost wholly watch SaltyBet for the AI fights.
This sounded ridiculous to me because who the heck actually cares about watching AI players fight each other? It was only when I realized that the version of M.U.G.E.N., a 2D freeware fighter, that SaltyBet is using for the AI fights has literally thousands of characters, some of which result in hilarious mismatches and cross-IP fights, that I started to understand the appeal. This unpredictability in matchups is a powerful hook when combined with the age old draw of gambling and a comment stream that could be a contender for purest concentration of eCulture to be found outside of 4chan.
- Salty Bet is the new Twitch sensation which pits characters from various franchises, tv shows, and anything in between that people have made for MUGEN. You're able to bet fictitious Salty Bucks on.
- Salty Bet Mobile online real money casinos to choose from, each casino has their own stable of available games. You may be looking for a casino that is heavier on the side of slots titles, in which case you will find these real money sites to your liking.
Speaking of the comment stream, stick around long enough and you’ll learn a few things:

His oldest known video was uploaded on June 2, 2018 named SJW Politics. Salty Bet Salty Bet is purely for entertainment purposes and no real money will be paid out. Salty Bucks are only used to play Salty Bet, they are not an actual currency and do not have value. Your access to exhibition match requests, the forum, Discord, or WWO may be removed at any time by a site moderator. Dear Salty, Some friends and I went to a music festival last weekend. The first night, after we’d been drinking and standing all day, we were starving and tried to order some sandwiches from a BBQ vendor at the festival. There was a long line, and when we got to the front, they told us they were out of most of their food, but could put together mac & cheese topped with some brisket.
- ALWAYS USE CAPITALS IN THE CHAT, THIS IS THE INTERNET AND THERE IS NO TIME TO CALM DOWN
- ALWAYS BET SWORD
- NEVER BET ANIME
- ALWAYS BET ROBOT
- ALWAYS BET ANDROID
- NEVER BET GUN
- ALWAYS BET MARVEL
- NEVER BET UMBRELLA OR MIRROR
- ALWAYS BET DBZ
- And, most importantly,
ALWAYS BET RARE AKUMA
These guidelines do a great job teaching you the only actual rule of SaltyBet: that, just like in real gambling, no blanket advice is always correct (although always betting on Marvel characters and fighters that have swords did pan out for me, and I think it’s pretty universally agreed that Rare Akuma could be the best character).
Indeed, the only real way to get a feel for the odds of a matchup, beyond watching hours and hours of this madness or setting up a program to log fight information into a database, is to donate 3 bucks a month and see the win/loss record of the two AI contenders during the betting stage. This helps you understand the clear favorite in the often one-sided matches, I watched a few matches where one character one shot-KO’d another, but be careful lest you bet too much and find yourself stuck down in the “Salt Mines” trying to scrape together enough money to bet on the next sure thing.
Twitch is great for plenty of things. Yes, it started out with gaming, but now you’ll find people streaming music, arts and crafts, or just chatting. There are still plenty of gaming streams too, so don’t worry about missing out on that.
As great as Twitch is, you might find yourself wishing it was more interactive. Yes, you can chat, but the actual outcome of the game you’re watching doesn’t really mean anything to you. What if that wasn’t the case?
What Is Salty Bet?
Salty Bet is a combination of two things. On one hand, it’s a Twitch stream that shows the M.U.G.E.N. fighting game engine. This particular instance is packed with characters you’ll recognize and some you won’t. You’ll see characters from fighting games like the Street Fighter series, but also random characters from, well, anywhere.
That’s only part of it. If you’ve only seen the Twitch stream, you may wonder why the name of the stream is Salty’s Dream Cast Casino. The answer is that the “bet” part of the name is true: you bet on the outcome of the A.I.-powered fights.
Do You Gamble With Real Money?
Salty Bet is only for fun, so no real money is involved. Instead of cash or cash-equivalent tokens, you bet with “Salty Bucks.” The only thing you can do with these Salty Bucks is bet with them, and the only point of betting is to win more Salty Bucks.
There is a leader board, so banking the most Salty Bucks earns you slightly more than simple bragging rights, but not much, and never for long. If you run out of Salty Bucks (and if you’re a beginner, you’re almost guaranteed to), don’t worry. When you run out, you’re given a small sum to start over.
How Do You Get Started?
You can’t bet on the Twitch website, so you’ll need to go to the official Salty Bet website. This is also where you’ll need to go to see the leaderboards. All you need to do is sign up to get started.
In the middle of the screen you’ll see the main fights happening, with the betting screen below. You’ll see how many Salty Bucks you have available and between fights you can pick the red or blue fighter to bet on. Once the fight begins, you’ll see the odds each opponent has of winning.
In the top right, you’ll see your username. Next to this are two numbers. The one in green is your current winning or losing streak. Next to that is your place on the leaderboard.
Strategies for Beginners
Because you only see the odds after the fight starts, you can’t rely on odds unless you write them down for every character or have an extremely good memory.
You can try reading the chat to figure out who to bet on, but you’ll find plenty of misinformation here. Once you’ve either watched or bet on a few fights, you’ll have a better idea of who to bet on.
One strategy that often works is to bet on the smaller character. Because of their size, smaller characters have smaller hitboxes. This means they have a smaller chance of getting hit. This isn’t a guarantee, but it’s one of the few strategies that has a history of working.
One final strategy: You’ll see plenty of people in the chat talking about going all-in, but this is rarely a good idea.
Need Some Variety in Your Twitch Streams?
